Discover Arctic Culture

Arctic Culture is a modern way of life firmly rooted in traditions and nature. Travelling in Lapland sheds light into local ways in the form of customs, food and sauna.

In Lapland, many cultural events are held in nature, and activity programs take you right into the everyday life of locals. The principle of equality has always been central in Arctic Culture, and along with an emotional connection to nature, is evident in the work of local artisans and artists.

The museums and science centres are interactive attractions showcasing, for example, forestry – an essential part of local livelihood and history. Outdoor museums are yet another manifestation of the close bond to nature Lapland is about.

The Sámi

Sápmi is the cultural region traditionally inhabited by the Sámi, the indigenous people of Lapland, and the northernmost in Europe. Sámi culture and the Sápmi region stretch over the national borders of northern Scandinavia covering parts of Finland, Sweden, Norway and Russia.

The Sámi Parliament is located in Norway, and the Sajos Sámi Cultural Centre in Inari is the main administrative site in Finland. Needless to say, Sámi culture has had a strong influence on what we today call Arctic Culture.

Design & Cuisine

Finnish design is known for its simplicity and functionality. Arctic design is based largely on the same principles, adding inspiration drawn from shapes in the northern surroundings.

When it comes to cuisine, self-sufficiency has always been a key factor in Arctic Culture, which today translates into focusing on seasonal local ingredients when cooking. Forests provide herbs, berries and mushrooms as well as meat and game; waters are a source of fish even when frozen, and farms produce everything from milk to meat and vegetables.

Sauna – the Foundation on Finnishness

The very foundation of Finnishness is without comparison the sauna. The sauna is a necessity for Finns, something they can’t go without for too long. The sauna is a place for physical and spiritual cleansing, for getting bare in all senses of the word, and entering the core of humanity.
